H and r firearms serial number

I was recently the high bidder on an H&R Model 999 at an estate auction. An LGS was taking care of the transfers, and I was almost unable to convince the owner (and a slightly arrogant, know-it-all counter person) that the "N" serial number on the revolver was for 1953, and therefore could be purchased with my Curio and Relic License.

The company continued to receive additional contracts for the M1, and by the time production ceased in 1956, H&R had produced 428,600 rifles. The end of production did not mark the end of the company's association with John Garand's rifle, as H&R later received a contract to rebuild 50,000 M1 rifles in 7.62mm NATO caliber for the U.S. Navy.Goforth's book H&R Arms Co 1871-1986 says the M48 was made 1943-1957, no mention of any Canadian production.
